Development Of The Coronet

BACKGROUND
Restricted space in to-day's small gardens demands compact plants. Conventional apple trees are unsuitable. They grow too big and do not crop for some years. Apple trees for today's gardens should be small, compact, early cropping and easy to grow.

RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT
I set about developing a better garden apple tree. Much trial and deliberation [over 20 years !] has culminated in the ideal garden plant: a miniature apple tree which crops immediately and is easy to maintain. We called it Coronet.

HOW IS THIS ACHIEVED
Springfield NurseryApple trees develop through a vigorous vegetative phase [strong branch growth and no fruiting] before settling into a mature cropping condition [rather like ourselves!]. In the nursery we hasten the completion of this vegetative phase by slowing down growth after an appropriate period. We do so by specialised cultural methods rather like producing bonsai plants. This includes frequent branch and root pruning and detailed attention to nutrition.
It takes five years to produce a Coronet. Normal trees are ready in two to three years.
All Coronets are grown on the most dwarfing rootstock available: M27.

Coronets are available at garden centres in Ireland and the U.K. and by mail order.

Development of the Coronet has been part funded by W.L.P.
